2.)immigrant- legal aliens that move to another country
3.)reservation- public land given to native Americans by the govt.
4.)refugee- move here for protection purposes
5.)assimilation-adapting to another culture

• the U.S. is prominently white
• there are more immigrants than white
•  California, Hawaii, new mexico, Texas, minority population exceed white
•  more females then males

• African Americans:
• African american  have been discriminated against more then other races
• 14% of people are African American
• things that were dine for African American have helped all other minorities and have made a bigger push for civil rights

• Native Americans:
• they were wiped out from diseases from the English
• poverty, joblessness, and alcoholism plague many reservations
• the Indian act of 1972 attempted to remedy the lives of native Americans, but has not been successful
• Hispanic Americans have a Spanish speaking background
• Hispanics are the smallest minority- 50 million in us 
• divided into 4 main sub groups: Mexican american,puerto rican Cuban Americans, central and south Americans 

• Asian Americans:
• Chinese laborers were the first asians to come to america in large numbers
• Chinese exclusion act of 1882-80 years 
• WWII- all Japanese were evacuated to the pacific coast
• wrong/ unjust- changed its ways
• women have also been treated unfairly
• still not considered "equal"
• it is illegal to pay women less than men

• Women have been treated unfairly by education, property rights, and employment opportunities
• Illegal to pay women less when they have the same qualifications
• The Civil Rights Act- voting provisions, public services, federal funding could not discriminate
•  Also known as the "Open Housing Act"
• Title IX- forbids discrimination on the basis of gender in any educational programs and assistance
• Affirmative Action- requires employers take positive steps to fix the effects of past discrimination
• Many argue that the result is reverse discrimination
• The Bakke case- sued a university because he was denied access to get in
• The court has made decisions on similar cases
• Justice Sandra Day O'Connor predicts in 25 years discrimination will no longer be a problem.

• american citizen is a person that swears allegiance to the u.s. and is entitled to its protection
• the 14th amendment
• the only way you are a citizen is if you were born or naturalization
• en masse is when a group of people become citizen because the united states gained territory
• you can banded your citizen ship expatriation
• its unconstitutional for congress to take away a persons citizenship
• denationalization is when a naturalized citizen looses his or her citizen ship because he or she did fraud or cheat on a test
• marriage does not make you a citizen but shortens the process of become a citizen
• congress has power to say who can and cant leave or come across the boarded
• quotas limit people from coming  over
• we let 675000 immigrants come over every yr and family members and those with occupations are giving considered more
• They can restrict people from entering the state if they could harm others. The main reason of deportation is if they are illegal immigrants, or if they are an illegal immigrant that committed a serious crime.
